Madison Keys vs. Zhang shuai Overview
Third seed Madison Keys will face familiar nemesis Zhang Shuai in the second round of the Silicon Valley Classic in San Jose on Wednesday.
Keys had an unhappy start to the year with a positive COVID-19 test result forcing her out of the Australian Open. She returned to the tour in Doha but suffered a series of early outings until the grass season, where she regained some form.
The American qualified for the quarter-finals in Berlin where she lost to eventual winner Liudmila Samsonova. Keys then advanced to the fourth round at Wimbledon for the first time since 2016, losing to Viktorija Golubic.
Back home now, the world number 26 is hoping to set a deep race this week in San Jose.
Zhang Shuai, meanwhile, defeated British teenage sensation Emma Raducanu 6-3, 6-2 in the first round in San Jose.
After seven tournaments in which she failed to register a victory, Zhang secured her first victory in Strasbourg. She then hit her stride at Nottingham, where she reached the fourth final of her career before losing to seed Johanna Konta.
The Chinese also recently advanced to the semi-finals in Palermo and will look to build on that momentum in San Jose.
Madison Keys vs. Zhang Shuai one-on-one
The duo have met six times on the WTA tour, with Zhang Shuai winning four times. Their last meeting took place last year at Roland Garros, the Chinese winning in straight sets.
Prediction Madison Keys vs Zhang Shuai
Madison Keys has a reputation as one of the toughest hitters in women’s football. His flat, heavy groundstrokes allow him to take control of rallies and strike winners from all parts of the court.
Zhang, for her part, will have to run a lot and put a lot of balls in play to frustrate the American. She will also need to put her volleyball skills to good use against the hard-hitting Keys.
Service could be a differentiator in this game. Keys is a big server and can knock down a lot of aces. If the American manages to control her straightforward errors, she should be able to come away with a win.
Prediction: Madison Keys wins in three sets.
