San Francisco Playground Damaged by Fire – NBC’s Bay Area

A San Francisco children’s playground near the Ferry Building will remain closed after a fire severely damaged it Thursday night, officials from the San Francisco Department of Recreation and Parks said.

The firefighters intervened around 11:30 p.m. at Sue Biermann Park, located at Washington and Drumm streets.

Although firefighters managed to extinguish the blaze, it destroyed a slide, pirate ship and rubber safety coating, park officials said.

A separate children’s play area near the park was not damaged. However, the entire playground remains closed and parts that were not damaged by the fire could reopen next week, park officials say.

“It’s heartbreaking and infuriating,” Recreation and Parks department general manager Phil Ginsburg said in a statement. “This playground was a dream for which the families of the neighborhood worked very hard to make it come true.

San Francisco Fire and Police Departments are investigating the cause of the blaze.

Sue Biermann Park opened in 2011. After neighborhood group Friends of the Waterfront Playground advocated for a new state-of-the-art playground, the playground was built in 2013, with its prize of $ 870,000 funded primarily by private donations and corporate sponsorships. .
