San Francisco General Hospital has 0 COVID-19 hospitalizations for the first time in over a year

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) – Doctors in San Francisco say Thursday was a monumental day in the fight against COVID-19. This is the first time in 14 months that the Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center, one of the city’s largest hospitals, has had zero cases of COVID-19 hospitalization.

“I was crying!” said Dr Monica Gandhi of San Francisco General Hospital. Gandhi refers to her reaction when she saw updated figures indicating the general is no longer hospitalized with COVID-19.

“It sounds like a big step, there is no admission to San Francisco General,” Gandhi says.

The news comes just four to five months after a very difficult time in the fight against COVID-19.

“I think December and January were our busiest times, as we faced a third wave of cases, we were extremely busy here at the hospital,” says Dr Vivek Jain, Co-Director of Infection Control at SF General. Jain says the huge acceptance of vaccines among residents of San Francisco, where 76% of the population has received at least one vaccine, has helped reduce rates of COVID-19 across the city and this is reflected at SFGH .

“All my friends have already been vaccinated! I’m finally feeling good and hopeful,” says Sam Pena, who lives in San Francisco.
UCSF officials tell us they currently have five hospital patients for COVID-19 in their hospitals. Stanford says they also currently have five hospitalized for COVID-19.

San Francisco General has had one or two COVID-19 patients over the past few weeks – and now this.

“Today is just a digital milestone, but I think it’s a time when we can reflect on progress and commit to making even more progress,” says Dr Jain.

“We are at a time when it is no longer a public health emergency, when you have so many people vaccinated, where you have so few cases and no one is sick in our hospital … that’s all just amazing, ”Gandhi said.
