In Song: San Francisco Opera’s Pene Pati to premiere on May 27

“In Song,” the new series of portraits and short songs from the San Francisco Opera, continues on May 27 with the premiere of In Song: Pene Pati.

The new episode will introduce Pati, who comes from a tight-knit and musical family of artists resembling Von Trapp, reveal the centrality of his life and musical journey through memories with his parents and songs with his father, Pene Pati, Sr., and his brother, the tenor Amitai Pati.

The episode was filmed on location in Mangere, New Zealand, and will feature musical selections “La’u Lupe” (“My Dove”), a traditional Samoan song and the ballad “La Serenata” by Italian composer Paolo Tosti. performed by Pati accompanying herself on the ukulele.

In a press release, Pati said, “I didn’t even know singing was a talent at first. I really don’t. It was so ingrained in our culture and in our DNA that you sing your story. Opera, in a sense, is all that. You sing a story to the next person and they pass it on. “

To celebrate the premiere of the new episode Pati and In Song, director and executive producer, Elena Park will be holding a live chat Thursday at 4 p.m. Pacific on Facebook and YouTube.

“In Song” is an intimate video portrait series featuring notable San Francisco Opera artists. Launched in March 2021, the series has already featured J’Nai Bridges and future episodes will star Jamie Barton, Arturo Chacón-Cruz and Amina Edris.
