Driving innovation in the heart of Silicon Valley

On this week’s episode of the Priorities podcast, in San Jose, Calif., Chief Innovation Officer Clay Garner talks about how he’s trying to address digital equity and emerging technologies in the heart of Silicon Valley.

Garner, who took office in January, said his top priorities were bridging the digital divide, thinking about how technology can improve public safety and embrace new technologies for road safety and transportation.

As part of this focus on road safety, the city is experimenting with lidar on its roads in an effort to calm a recent spike in pedestrian fatalities. Garner says the city is using sensor technology to identify near misses, a “crucial” data point as the city tries to address a fatal problem that has been nationally exacerbated by the pandemic. The innovation manager says the near-miss data point helps complete the picture of what’s happening on the city’s roads between actual crash data, as well as its camera-based road monitoring systems .

In the news this week:

Virginia has a new CIO. Bob Osmond, formerly chief information officer for the State Department of Transportation, will take over as head of the Virginia Information Technology Agency. Osmond comes to work after the abrupt departure of Phil Wittmer, who quit after less than a month in the role earlier this year.

The Texas Department of Information Resources designated Angelo State University as the first of several Regional Security Operations Centers in the state. The SOC will provide network monitoring and incident response services to local governments and other West Texas entities. The regional SOCs were part of sweeping cybersecurity legislation Governor Greg Abbott signed into law last year.

The California Department of General Services has added GitLab to the state software licensing program. GitLab is a publisher of software development tools that check individual lines of code for known vulnerabilities in near real time instead of waiting for an entire program to complete.
